Derrick Cabrera Candidacy Speech

Brothers I am ready for the challenge of becoming your next National President. And I'd hope that my record alone is enough reason for you to believe that I am the man for the job.

At Beta Chapter: I served on the Rush and Social Committees; IFC Representative for 1 year; National Representative for 1 year; Ritual Master for 1 year; Assistant Candidate Educator for 1 year; Recording Secretary for 1 year; Candidate Educator for 2 years Executive Vice President for 1 year; President for 1 year.

9 years of positions I squeezed into 5 1/2 years I was eligible to serve the Chapter. Yes, that's right, a total of 6 years of college (laugh it up).

As a sophomore I received the Mr. Alpha Delt Award - Active of the Year from Beta Chapter. Later - the Mac Boland Award from National. Later still - Most Outstanding Alumnus Award from Beta Chapter. And most recently - the Drew Lamping Award - the highest award possible given to a Beta Member.

In that time, as an active, I also served as: National Philanthropic Director for 1 year; National Student Representative for 1 year; And I've now been Executive Vice President for the last 4 years. The first of these four just finishing up my undergrad.

I re-wrote the candidate education process at Beta to include an emphasis on Brotherhood and learning about what Brotherhood means.

I co-authored Beta's Chapter Government Structure, which is being used today in the Chapter Constitution template for our new Colonies, and some Chapters.

As an active, I approached and met with 2 different Universities in St. Louis regarding National's possible expansion there.

I co-authored our National Government Structure that we use today.

I've helped keep Zeta Chapter afloat and revive Zeta from 1 active and continue to follow their progress today.

I took the lead in giving Brother Smulders the support he needs from the National Chapter from the executive standpoint and I found Mark Ryan S.J., our new National Moderator.

I've assisted in authoring sections of our National Website.

I've researched our National Insurance policy and forced more competitive quotes from our current provider and others.

I'm 27 years old and I have dedicated a third of my life to being a part of this Fraternity. ONE THIRD. I started my candidacy in the Fall of 1995 and I have held positions, local and National, since my induction that November.

When I was a sophomore, I attended Toga at Zeta Chapter with Twan. Twan took me aside to introduce me to a possible rushee of theirs. Twan put his arm around me, pointed to me and said, "You see this man…he shits red and gold." And aside from the horrible medical implications this could possibly entail - as a sophomore it truly was a compliment I could never forget.

I firmly believe I can be your next National President. As I had said, I hope my record speaks for itself. Its my time, and I'm ready to take on this responsibility.
